"Nighthawks" by Edward Hopper
Created: 1942 Location: Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, United States of America
An iconic depiction of urban isolation, Nighthawks depicts a quarter of characters at night inside a greasy spoon with an expansive wraparound window that almost takes up the entire facade of the diner.
It's a study of alienation as the figures studiously ignore each other while losing themselves in a state of reverie or exhaustion. The redheaded woman on the far right is the artist's wife Jo, who frequently modeled for him.

Who is the artist? Edward Hopper, 1882-1967, American
Edward Hopper was an American realist painter and printmaker. While he is best known for his oil paintings, he was equally proficient as a watercolorist and printmaker in etching. Both in his urban and rural scenes, his spare and finely calculated renderings reflected his personal vision of modern American life.
Edward Hopper’s artwork is known for its realistic scenes that touch themes of isolation and self-being rather than a narrative context.
He often described his art as a “transcription [of his] most intimate impressions of nature” meaning he related the process of painting to that of memory. This idea could further be described in another way as when, for example, you draw something from a personal memory, certain details can be remembered but everything outside the primary focus is blank background
His painting Chop Suey (1929) was sold for USD 91.9 million in 2018 to a private collector.
